If you're applying for a Student visa (Subclass 500), you must hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of your visa. This is a visa condition, not a university preference, and you'll need your OSHC details to lodge your visa application.
- OSHC can only be provided by Australian insurers approved by the Department of Health.
- Your cover must start from your arrival date and last until your visa expires, which is often a few months after your course ends.
- Dependents (partner, children) on your visa must be covered too, under a couples or family policy.
- Letting your OSHC lapse can breach your visa conditions.
Some universities have a preferred OSHC provider, but you're generally free to choose any approved provider.
