Most international students in New Zealand aren't eligible for publicly funded healthcare, so a single hospital stay could cost tens of thousands of dollars. That's why:
- Immigration New Zealand requires student visa holders to maintain acceptable medical and travel insurance for their entire stay.
- The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 requires your school to make sure you're appropriately insured.
- Many institutions have a preferred insurance policy. If you choose a different one, you'll usually need to submit it for approval before enrollment.
New Zealand's ACC scheme covers some accident-related treatment for everyone, including visitors, but it does not cover illness, travel, repatriation, or all accident costs. You still need full insurance.
