What you need to know
You cannot enroll at a German university or get your residence permit without proof of health insurance. Which type you need depends mainly on your age and your program:
Under 30 and enrolled at a state-recognized university: Public (statutory) insurance is generally mandatory.
30 or older, a language-course student, or in a Studienkolleg / preparatory program: You're generally not eligible for the public student rate, so private insurance is the standard route.
Arriving before your semester starts? Many students need private "incoming" cover for the first weeks, then switch to public insurance at enrollment.
Exemption is permanent: Under-30 students can apply to be exempted from public insurance within three months of enrollment, but that decision generally applies for your entire degree. Talk to us before you choose.
Public or private?
Two questions. The right card lights up.

Germany FAQs
Before you hit submit.
Your eligibility for the public student rate is generally tied to age 30 and the length of your studies. When the student rate ends, you typically move to a different public tariff at a higher monthly cost, but you don't lose coverage. Our team can walk you through what that change will look like for your timeline before it happens.
Yes, and it's a common route. Many students buy private cover for their visa application and first weeks in Germany, then register with a public insurer when they enroll. Just don't formally apply for an exemption from public insurance unless you intend to stay private for your whole degree.
For your residence permit, the immigration office needs proof of adequate health cover. Public insurance is accepted automatically. Requirements can vary slightly between cities, so bring your full certificate, not just a summary, to your appointment.
Public insurance is provided by the respective statutory insurer (e.g., Techniker Krankenkasse, AOK).
Your university says "mandatory health insurance." Let's handle it.
